About the Militia Immaculata

What Is Militia Immaculata (MI)?

In St. Maximilian’s words, “The MI is a global vision of Catholic life under a new form, consisting in the bond with the Immaculata, our universal mediatrix before Jesus.  (KW1220)

The MI is all about God revealing to mankind His gratuitous love through Jesus “the Word was made flesh.”       After Mary gave her “fiat” at the Annunciation, “Let it be done to me according to your word,” the Holy Spirit fashioned the humanity of Jesus in her womb.

When Fr. Kolbe reflected on God giving us Jesus’ divine life through the Immaculata, fascinated and enraptured, (he) exclaims: “Everywhere is love!” “God is love,” says John (1 Jn. 4:8)   This excessive love is transmitted to us through the first-born, the Man-God, Jesus.  We are reborn in Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit in and through the womb of the Immaculata. As children of God, we called to live in communion with Him and to share His divine life for all eternity.

When we entrust our life to Mary who cooperates with the Holy Spirit, this “excessive” love of Christ is channeled through her and forms us into His divine image.  St. John Paul II fully understood Mary’s role in salvation history in transmitting this love and forming us in and through her Immaculate Heart.  This is why “Pope John Paul II has proclaimed St. Maximilian “a prophet and sign” of a hoped for new era in the Church and the world – “the civilization of love.”

The Immaculata’s spiritual motherhood was given to us by Jesus on the cross when He said, “Woman,  there is your son.” In turn, He said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” From that hour onward, the disciple took her into his care.” Jn.19:26-27   When John took Mary into his care, he invited her to come into his heart. Here she could exercise her spiritual motherhood and bring Jesus to spiritual birth in him as a reflection of God’s presence to the world.  We also do the same in consecrating ourself to Mary.

In this text, Maximilian defines beautifully the MI Identity and mission:

“That is the MI: to let her into all hearts, to bring her into being within all hearts, that by entering those hearts and taking most perfect possession of them, she may there give birth to the sweet Jesus, God, and there raise Him to perfect age. What a beautiful mission!…Is that not true?  …. The elevation of man to God-Man, through the God-Man’s mother? (KW 508)

This gratuitous love of God has everything to do with the association of the Militia of the Immaculata and salvation history.  MI cannot be properly understood without the foundation of God’s universal love for everyone manifested in Jesus Christ, His Son.  This love is transmitted through the power of Holy Spirit in union with His spouse, the Immaculata, through whom flows this divine life.

Prayer of the Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit,

Make your dwelling within us as You did in Mary’s heart.

Fill us with grace so that we might be fruitful as was Mary.

Conceive through Faith the Son of God in us as you did in Mary’s womb.

Set out hearts on fire as You did Mary’s heart in the upper room.

And like the Immaculata, let us never be separated from You by sin.

Do this, All for the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
